The Empordà: a land of wines touched by the Tramuntana wind

Thursday, 20 de March de 2014

The Empordà is a winemaking zone with a good potential for wine tourism. Few places in the world concentrate in a single territory so much history, so much landscape and so much culture of wine.

The Designation of Origin Empordà now has some 50 member wineries, over half of which have been founded since the year 2000. The production zone of the D.O. Empordà is situated in the extreme north-east of Catalonia and embraces a total of 48 municipalities distributed in two districts: 35 in the Alt (Upper) Empordà and 13 in the Baix (Lower) Empordà.

El Empordà has a great variety of wines. The red wines are high quality, full-bodied, well-structured and harmonious, sometimes with added hues thanks to careful aging. These reserva and crianza wines boast special aromatic notes. They are complex, with a subtle fragrance and a hint of spice, always preserving the aromas of the fruit and the vine. On the palate, they are full, flavoursome and pleasant.

Fresh and flavoursome white wines are elaborated with autochthonous varieties and other high quality single varieties. Rosé wines are also produced with a well-defined cherry colour, great personality, a delicate aroma, fresh with a moderate alcohol content.

A speciality of the area is the Garnatxa de l´Emporda, a naturally sweet wine produced from the Garnacha grape. Full-bodied, with the flavour of the grape itself, mature, warm and smooth — virtues giving it the features of an exceptional dessert wine, together with the area's own sweet wine, the Moscatell de l’Empordà.

La Quadra is located approximately 35 kilometres from the leading wineries of the region.

* We can make reservations at different wineries of the D.O. Empordà with a tasting session (according to availability of the winery and with prior reservation).
